Peanut Butter Oat Dog Treat Ingredients

For peanut butter oat dog treats, you need the following ingredients:

  • Applesauce- Be sure it'sunsweetened.
  • Peanut Butter- Any smooth peanut butter will work.
  • Oat Flour– Oat flour is sold in stores, but it’s also super easy to make at home. Simply blend old-fashioned oats in a high-speed blender until the oats become a fine powder (about 30 seconds to a minute). Store your oat flour in an air-tight container for up to three months.

How to make Peanut Butter Oat Dog Treats

Peanut Butter Oat Dog Treats (3)

As I said, these are so easy to make. You simply mix the dough, roll it out, cut out shapes, and bake. I use these dog treat cookie cutters, but any cookie cutter will work.

It's that easy!

Tips and Storage

  • Silicone baking matswork great for this recipe and for most cookie recipes. They are worth the investment as you can use them over and over again instead of buying parchment paper.
  • I find it easier to mix the oat flour in by hand, although a large spoon works too if you prefer not to get your hands messy. You can also use the paddle attachment of a stand mixer.
  • Store your dog treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. These freeze well for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • cup applesauce unsweetened
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 2 cups oat flour* (ground oats)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325° F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

  • In a large bowl, mix the applesauce sauce and peanut butter until thoroughly combined using a large spoon or spatula.

  • Mix in the oat flour ½ cup at a time, stirring until combined (you can also mix with your hands), and it forms a slightly sticky ball. If you are using natural peanut butter (drippy), you may need to add a bit more oat flour.

  • Place the dough on a lightly floured surface ( I used oat flour) and knead it into a ball. Roll it out until almost ½ inch thick. Using your cookie cutter (dipped in oat flour), cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Collect the scraps, knead lightly, roll out again, and cut more dog treats. Repeat until you've used all the dough.

  • Bake for 30 minutes. Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for 10 minutes before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for two weeks. These freeze well for up to 3 months.

  2. I find it easier to mix the oat flour in by hand. You can also use the paddle attachment of a stand mixer.
  3. For crunchier dog treats, bake for 10-15 minutes more.

I need help ! When I go to roll them out my dough won’t stick together very well it’s making them crumble?

    Reply

    • Crystal Yentzen says

It sounds like your dough is a bit too dry. I would add a bit more applesauce and try to roll it out again. Are you measuring your oat flour correctly? For next time be sure to spoon your flour into your measuring cup and level it off with a butter knife. If you scoop your measuring cup into the flour, it's likely that you will get too much flour. I hope this helps!

Crystal, these are fantastic our dog loves them and she is about to go bring some to her neighbors. Love that they are very healthy, limited ingredient, vegan option. One suggestion is to grind a little extra oats for the flour as it will be needed when rolling - at least for an amateur like me as it took longer than 15 minutes to prepare :). I tried them too and they are not at all bad! PS I printed your web address on the baggies - credit is well earned. Thanks again for posting this - and warmest wishes to you and your family. Berry

My dog can be finicky about her food. I have now made these twice and she will come when the container is opened and beg for them. I love that there are only 3 simple healthy ingredients. Very easy to make and store.

I have a silicon mat for dog treats. we have 3 dogs and are training them all so we need a lot of treats. My mat makes treats about 1cm by 1cm by 1cm or so - maybe sliiightly smaller. Should I still bake for 30 minutes? It makes about 250 treats per the size of a normal cookie tray.

    • Crystal Yentzen says

Hi Alysha. I've never baked treats that small, so I can't say for sure how long they will need. I would start with 5-10 minutes. Keep an Eye on them so they don't burn. They're ready when they start to firm up. Let me know how they turn out!

I even froze some for the pup (that chews through everything) to help with his teething, I put the cut outs in between parchment paper & put in the freezer he loves them!

I have made these several times and my 2 golden retrievers love them! I have made them to give as gifts for my dog loving friends as well. One trick that makes rolling out really easy and non-stick, is rolling the dough out between 2 pieces of wax paper, adjusting the wax paper if it gets wrinkled.
    Thanks for this recipe.

Yes, but you may need to add more oat flour if your peanut butter is extra drippy. You should be able to roll the dough into a ball with your hands. Let me know how they turn out!
