I love making homemade dog treats for my puppy! And while they can be healthy, please note I am not a vet or any other trained professional. Please contact your vet for more information about what is safe and appropriate for your pet.

I also like to make seasonal treats for the puppy: gingerbread near Christmas (and his birthday, because they are his favorite), cranberry in the fall, and these Oat Carrot Cake Dog Treats in the spring around Easter!
Homemade dog treats are simple to make, moreso than cookies since less can go wrong.
These carrot dog treats are made with simple ingredients.
The ground flax seeds are completely optional however I like to add them for the health benefits.
I have also found that any type of oat turns out great. Because the base of the dog cookies is ground oats, it results in gluten free dog treats.
I add the yogurt just a little at a time to bring everything together but keeping the dough rather dry.
If the dough is super sticky when you try to roll it out, there are a few things you can do.
1) Add more oats or oat flour.
2) Sprinkle all purpose or whole wheat flour on the rolling surface and on the rolling pin.
The use of flour adds gluten, if you are concerned about that, but a great option. If you do not have yogurt, anything with moisture would work such as a mashed banana or applesauce. Overripe or frozen bananas are perfect!

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes minutes
Idle Time: 2 hours hours
Total Time: 2 hours hours 30 minutes minutes
Servings: 26 2″ cookies
Calories: 44kcal
Ingredients
- 2 cups oats divided
- 1 1/2 cups shredded carrots
- 1 egg
- 2 Tablespoons flax seed optional
- 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt (or more as needed)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350F.
Place 1 cup of the oats in a food processor and grind until it has a flour-like consistency. Place the ground oats in a large mixing bowl.
Add the remaining ingredients, including the whole oats, to the bowl. Stir to combine. Add more yogurt if needed until the dough just sticks together. If too sticky, add more oats, oat flour, or all purpose/wheat flour (if desired).
If the mixture is sticky, lightly dust the surface with flour or additional ground oats. Roll out the dough to approximately 1/4" thick. Using your desired cookie cutter, cut out the treat shapes and place them on a silicone baking mat or parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Bake treats at 350F for 20 minutes. Turn off the oven, leaving the cookies inside, and let them sit for two hours. This will make the cookies crunchier. For soft cookies, remove them after 15-20 minutes to cool at room temperature.
Store soft treats in an airtight container, kept in the refrigerator, for up to 2 weeks. Hard treats can be kept at room temperature up to 3 weeks.
Notes
The number of treats will vary with the thickness of the dough and size of the cookie cutter. This makes 26 treats that are 2″ circles.
Ground flax seeds are completely optional but a great healthy ingredient to add as they provide fiber and are anti-inflammatory. Talk to your vet for more information.
Any type of oats that you have should work well.
