Homemade Dog Treats With Peanut Butter, Whole Wheat, and Oats (2024)

by Sarita Gelner

Before we get to the best homemade dog treats ever, let’s take a look back several years. It was the Fall of 2009. Grant and I lived in a high rise in Marina del Rey, CA. We were both trying to find the meaning of our lives while falling madly in love. We were broke and happy and young. But something was missing… While strolling the feed of my Facebook page one evening I came across this face and a panicked plea for a “temporary” foster home.

How can anyone resist that face?! So we “fostered” Lukas. Of course that turned into us adopting him from http://www.starpawsrescue.org/! To adopt this big guy, we moved into a street level apartment and became even happier and even more broke, haha!

Fast forward 9 years, and Lukas is still the big shot of the family!

Lukas is a cancer survivor, and since his surgery, he has put on a lot of weight. So I have stopped buying dog treats and opted for homemade dog treats to give him whole foods without fillers, spices, or anything unnecessary.

Lukas is our best friend. And best friends deserve the best treats. So today’s post is all about our furry dog friends. My homemade dog treats are made with organic ingredients and are Lukas’s favorite dog treats. These homemade dog treats have natural peanut butter, whole wheat, oats, and powdered milk. Only the best for man & woman’s best friend!

So let’s bake the best homemade dog treats that are sure to get you extra kisses and pawesome high fives.

Homemade Dog Treats / Cookie Dough

As I mentioned, these homemade dog treats are filled with only a handful of organic ingredients. Since Lukas is a senior dog that needs to watch his weight while still getting treats, these dog biscuits are made with a base of whole wheat and oats. Adding Dry Milkwill give that milk bone essence and creaminess that dogs love in a treat.

First, you will combine all of your dry ingredients (oats, flour, dry milk) into a big bowl. Then you will add in your Organic Peanut Butter, along with a beaten egg, and mix well.

Peanut butter textures do vary, so the amount of liquid you add will depend on this factor. If the peanut butter is runny, reduce the liquid. If the peanut butter is thicker, then add a bit more. It is always best to start with less and have the chance to work your way up. Want to make your own Peanut Butter? Check out,Peanut Butter Recipe.

The last step of the homemade dog treats dough is to incorporate some chicken stock. You can also swap this out with water or beef broth.
