Preliminary Severe Storm Summary for May 21, 2024 (2024)

Overview

Multiple rounds of storms moved across the western Great Lakes on Tuesday, May 21st. During the morning and early afternoon hours, non-severe storms produced heavy rainfall and frequent lightning, along with brief gusty winds associated with a wake low.

By mid-afternoon there was a lull in precipitation across much of the area, that helped the atmosphere recover and reenergize ahead of a fast-moving line of severe storms moving across Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin.

Aline of severe storms moved into central Wisconsin around 7pm.The storms produced widespread wind damage and a few tornadoes as they marched east/northeast across much of northeast Wisconsin. There were many reports of tree damage and power outages,with some structures damaged as well.

Summary: The tornado developed just southwest of the Village of Unity in Clark County Wisconsin. The tornado produced damage in the western portion of Unity before crossing Highway 13 into Marathon County while producing additional damage in the northeast side of Unity including damage to an outbuilding along County Highway P. The tornado continued to produce scattered tree damage as it tracked northeast across Chokecherry Road and Juneberry Road. The tornado lifted near Mulberry Road with straight line winds continuing northeast to County Road N just southeast of Colby. Summary: A tornado developed along Wuertzburg Road northwest of the Village of Edgar and tracked northeast, lifting before reaching County Road U between the Village of Athens and the Town of Rib Falls. Tree damage occurred along the path of the tornado. There was scattered damage to structures along Wuertzburg Road where the tornado first touched down, including a collapsed barn.

Summary: A tornado developed along Buchanan Road southwest of the Village of Kaukauna, snapping trees and producing isolated structural damage to the garages of a couple homes. The tornado quickly tracked northeast producing scattered tree damage mainly with broken branches and pockets of uprooted trees. Just before the tornado lifted in Central Park along the Fox River, it produced structural damage to the roof of an apartment building along Bicentennial Court. A large healthy tree was snapped at this location as well.
