There were no reports of heavy damage or serious injury from the heavy weather, although witnesses say a tornado, accompanied by hail, touched down in northwest Angelina County. Rain of 5 inches per hour fell from a thunderstorm over southern Nacogdoches County and a flash flood warning was issued for Nacogdoches and San Augustine counties. High water forced the closing of several rural roads in Nacogdoches County, and of Highway 21 between Nacogdoches and Melrose. Late Monday afternoon a tornado was reported between Wells and Pollock just northeast of Lufkin.
Reports of hail most of it less than an inch in diameter were numerous. But baseballsized hail fell near Dallas; Center was hit by hail that broke windshields; and near Brady and Lake Buchanan, the National Weather Service reported "hellish" winds and hail 2 to 3 inches across. Tornadoes also were reported near Waskom and Eustace in northeast Texas, and in the Central Texas counties of Lampasas and Burnet. The storms were caused by a cold front that stretched from near Texarkana to the Big Bend area, but Alice in South Texas had the nation's high temperature today with a 98-degree reading. Skies in West Texas were fair.
Behind the front, evening temperatures dropped into the 50s and 60s in North Texas and the Panhandle. Readings were in the 70s and 80s in the rest of the state. Heavy snow hits the Plains By The Associated Press Near-blizzard conditions gripped the northern Plains on Monday as a cold front spread northerly winds and heavy snow across the region while gusting wind and blowing snow drifted through the Dakotas.
Wind gusted to 40 mph in western North Dakota, where 10 inches of snow fell at Kildeer. A half-foot of snow covered Regent and Mott and 5 inches of snow fell at Dickinson. Temperatures plunged to 15 below zero in Yellowstone National Park overnight in Wyoming. Temperatures were only in the 40s in South Dakota and wind at Rapid City gusted to 60 mph. More than a half-foot of snow fell at Lemmon, S.D., and rain and snow were mixed over eastern South Dakota.
Thunderstorms stretched across the Gulf Coast states where temperatures were in the 80s. Columbus, got 1.43 inches of rain while thunderstorms near Waco, Texas, pounded the community of Mart with hail the size of hen eggs. Thunderstorms also spread through Missouri into Illinois. Temperatures around the nation at 2 p.m. EST ranged from 95 at McAllen, Texas, to 24 at Laramie, Wyo.

297-0052 Longview today Body found near Interstate 20 A 7-year-old boy flagged down a Longview patrolman Monday, telling the officer he wanted to show him where a dead body was lying, according to authorities. Patrolman John Lewis did not really know what to think about the youngster's claim, but followed the boy to a clump of trees behind a local motel near I-20 and discovered the body about 5 p.m. Monday. Police information officer Sgt. Dean Kinney said Justice of the Peace Nick Dennis of Kilgore came to the site, ruled the victim dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.
'Kinney said it appeared the victim had been dead quite some time, noting the victim had no identification on him when found. "We couldn't tell if foul play was involved, but we did not see any bullet wounds on the body," Kinney said. "'We didn't go into it any further out there, but will wait until after the autopsy." Drug arrests net four suspects Three juveniles and an adult were arrested in separate, unrelated drug arrests Monday, according to Longview police. Police were called by Longview I.S.D. officials after teachers at the Whaley Street Special Assignment Center and at Longview High School apprehended three students with suspected drugs, police said.
The students, all juveniles, were picked up by police and turned over to juvenile authorities, who are continuing an investigation, police said. In the second incident, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m., Special Services agents arrested an Electra Street resident on a charge of felony possession of marijuana and a misdemeanor charge of possession of amphetamines. Police obtained a search warrant for an Electra Street residence based on information received from an informant. Officers recovered about a half pound of marijuana and arraignment is pending for the suspect. "It was just an unusually busy day for us," one narcotics officer observed.
Marshall officers seek gunman MARSHALL Marshall police are continuing their investigation for a Inn suspect in the Sunday armed robof the Ramada motel. Police said the robbery occurred at 2:39 a.m. Sunday when the man entered, asked about a room and then pointed a pistol at the clerk while telling her to fill a paper bag with money. After getting the cash, the bandit made the clerk lie facedown on the floor behind the counter and fled on foot. Suspect awaiting arraignment A suspect in the slashing of a Longview resident awaits arraignment on a charge of aggravated assault, according to police.
Police arrested the suspect after a 20-year-old man was admitted to Longview Regional Hospital for a knife wound to the stomach. The victim was reported in satisfactory condition. Parolee facing robbery charge A 19-year-old burglary parolee has been charged with armed robbery following an incident April 1 17 at a Spring Hill barbershop. Gregory Lynn Killen of Kilgore was arrested by the Gregg County Sheriff's Department and remains in jail in lieu of $10,000 bond. A man entered the barbershop, produced a pistol and took wallets from the owner and a customer before firing two shots from a pistol.
No one was hurt as one of the bullets entered the floor while the second exited through a window and struck an adjacent building. The wallets, which contained no money, were found abandoned a short distance from the barbershop, according to investigators. Officers found a car late Saturday which was believed involved in the robbery and arrested Killen Sunday afternoon after an extensive investigation. Kenneth Craig Davidson, 22, and Marvin Ray Lane, 23, were pronounced dead at the scene at 7:40 a.m. Monday by Justice of the Peace Don Steelman. A third man, Ernest Hayden Williams, 38, also of Hallsville, was admitted to Marshall Memorial Hospital in good condition with cuts and bruises. 63-year-old Gilmer man dies GILMER A 63-year-old Gilmer man died Monday morning after falling from the tree he was trimming in front of his home, police said.
The accident victim, M.J. Young of 1520 Frost died about 11 a.m. at Ford Memorial Hospital in Gilmer, Upshur County Ambulance spokesman Ray Griffin said. Young, a bank custodian, apparently fell about 20 feet from the tree he was trimming at his home in north Gilmer about 10:30 a.m., hitting his head on the sidewalk below, Griffin said. His body was taken to Loyd Funeral Home.
